Okahandja

Okahandja is located near a tributary river of Swakop river in 1400 m height. It is a typical namibian small town with a lot of flair. It is the captitel of the homeland of the herero. The graves of their chiefs are there.

Okahandja was founded in 1872 by the "Rheinische Mission". You can see today the church, which was built at that time. 1901 the narrow-gauge railway coming from Swakopmund reached Okahandja. The old railway station is still used.

Okahandja got two streetmarkets where you can buy for example wood carvings and stone carvings from the native people.
